Our Garden is Back on Its Groove

Because of pocket gophers’ problem last year, I thought our garden days were over. But apparently not so. We finally thought of ways to outsmart the conniving and illusive gophers by building raised beds made of bricks and spreading hardware cloth at the bottom. My husband spent about 3 weeks on the first bed, and is currently half-way through with the second one. The process involves a lot of hard labor because he has to fill the bottom with huge rocks for drainage. Then he mixes the top soil with sand and uses it to fill up the bed.
So far, we are happy with the results as shown by the pictures below.

Notice there are some holes on pechay’s leaves. Despite of the shade cloth that we put over the plants, some unknown insects still manage to get through. But, it is okay because those holes don’t alter the taste of the vegetables.
My husband has been telling me to thin off the beets as they are getting crowded. I thought I would just leave them the way they are right now until I have the courage to pull off the unfortunate plants.

Our first harvest which includes pechay, chard, and beet’ tops. And guaranteed pesticide free.
And I transformed them into this delicious veggie dish. Oh, so good!
Fresh fruits and veggies from the garden.

wow Belle! ang galing naman. When I was little we had this little vegetable garden din in our frontyard inspired from the pictures I saw in my elementary books. Agriculture was one of our subjects in elementary and I remember developing a liking to it for a while.
Even until now when I go home and ask for a tomato na ilalagay ko sa pinag halong suka at toyo, my mother will just go to the garden and voila! I get my fresh tomato hehe
Your very own fresh produce. Dapat yan ang ginagawang project ng mga barangay, backto the Green Revolution!
i just had several tomatoes chopped in my manually-operated food processor for our pasta tomorrow
Store bought, not backyard produced though.
Great idea to combat those rodents! I’m so happy for you that you were able to find a way to grow your garden. Your veggies look so yummy!
Belle, you’re lucky you can do that in your garden, and you not only have the time, but the green thumb as well. ok pa din ba ang weather/climate dyan? it’s crazy here, init, lamig, intense init, ulan, init…
Raised bed made of bricks and rocks as drainage? It’s the first I’ve heard of this method and its a little hard to imagine, but I suppose as long as it works, then it’s all good.
Belle, so you grow apples too? I like granny apples, I made them my morning fresh juice with a stick of celery and pineapple everyday. The tomatoes also look gorgeous
Sobra ka Belle, you can grow pechay that good sa US? I love pechay, in HK we have those ‘teeny-boopers’ size, nilalaga lang tapos buhusan mo nin “oyster sauce” masilam.
Yung tomato mo para syang persimmon. Sarap sa salad nyan.
how come u never make yummy food like that when i’m actually home????
If I had a garden like this, I feel I can stay there forever.
I think it’s good that you have a vegetable garden at home. I’m not much of a vegetable eater, but if you serve me that dish, I think I’ll dig in.
Verns, i like tomatoes, suka and toyo as sawsawan.
Julie, in our barrio, people plant veggies everywhere even in creek, and canals. it is a good practice.
Tina, hope this method works otherwise we give up..hehe.
Dine, weather here is too hot, that is why, we put shade cloth over the plants otherwise, they wilt and burn up.
Wil, it works as you can see in the picture…
Elyani, we have several apple trees planted in the periphery of the house but only one bore fruits.
K, yes, we can grow pechay as long as the shade is on. i tried adding slices of persimmon on the salad..and i liked it. i wonder if it makes good kani salad?
tepsiepsi, when u were here, the plants were not ready for harvesting yet. but i cooked u lots of yummy food, didn’t i?
anna, you were asking if beet tops are good? the kind that we have in the garden produces good tops…and very very good for you.
niceheart, you don’t like vegetables? i find that hard to believe..hehe.
