Ohh No, Not Me

Nol: You have them too?
Me: What?
Nol: Those brown patches on your face.
Me: (she noticed them, they must have gotten worse.)
Not wearing any make up, I looked in the mirror and sure enough, I have them so visible in both cheeks like I didn’t put my bronzer in the correct spot. I brushed it off like it was no big deal and concentrated mainly on having fun with my vacation in the province.
Went swimming without using any sunblock lotion considering that it was a cloudy day. Spent about 2 hours frolicking on the beach in my bathing suit. The following day, I felt a slight discomfort on my back - a sunburn perhpas, and the brown spots on my face became noticeable to many.
I thought they were temporary but why they haven’t faded away? Could they be something cancerous? Before I left to the Philippines, I went to see a doctor for something else and simultaneously consulted about those patches on my face. He said they were not cancerous, which was a big relief.
Which made me think? How did I get them? What did I do differently earlier this year?
I remember now- my kind of job exposes me to the harmful UV rays 6 hours a day yet I quit using sunblock lotion on my face and on my arms and legs because they were giving me rashes. I didn’t know what I was thinking but I thought that it would do my skin good if i gave it a break from whatever chemicals in the sunblock lotion that were giving me rashes. The only shield I had from the sun was the facial moisturizer and lotion on my arms and legs and a hat, and it went on like that for 3 to 4 months.
Evidently, the sun shield that I thought would help protect me from the sun was not enough. Those brown spots came like a thief in the night and without explanation. At first, they were hardly noticeable, more like trapped dirt or make-up so I thoroughly but gently scrubbed them using a product I bought, hoping that they would go away, but just like stubborn stains, they lingered. Though, i could still camouflage them with a bronzer.
Now, have anyone of you had them and if so, what product did you use to help diminish the discoloration? A Filipino friend of mine highly recommends JJJ Magic Spot Removing Cream because it did the trick on hers. At 62 years old, she has a flawless skin. She said to go look for JJJ in Sta Cruz in Manila but I didn’t have the time to make a trip to a place I haven’t set foot in for a long time. I was just too busy during the only day I was in Manila and so I thought I would look for it online when I returned to the US.
Turns out that the product is only available in the Philippines but can also be purchased online for a more expensive price. I wasn’t too sure if I should order it because of the long shipping time. Instead, I ordered an Emu oil, that a friend of mine in the US extremely recommends.
you see that brown patch on my cheek?
Except for the JJJ, these are the products that I have used on my face since my return to the US, namely:
- Ganozhi soap - given by a good friend
- Face SPF 70
- Papaya & Pineapple Masque
- Loreal Ultra Hydrating Cream
- Ly Na
And not included in the list that I also use once in a while are lemon juice and white distilled vinegar diluted with water.
Which one/s should I discontinue or continue? Help!

Hi Belle. Sorry I couldn’t be much help to you but I’m glad to know that it’s not cancerous.
My dermatologist has repeatedly told me to wear sunblock every time I go out but many times I take it for granted. I should apply sunblock more often.
Do you know what sunscreen ingredients your Face SPF70 contains?
It sounds like you have sensitive skin if you say your sunblock gives you rashes. Try physical sunblocks then - those that contains zinc oxide or titanium oxide with an SPF of at least 30. Burts Bees has a new sunblock but it’s only titanium dioxide. I know you can get Blue Lizard sunscreens there. They contain zinc oxide which is a good sunscreen ingredent for those with sensitive skin. I have done quite a fair bit of research into this. If you’re interested, you can read my beauty blog which has an entire section all about sunscreens.

For the patch on your face, I am hesistant in recommending anything. Didn’t your dermatologist recommend? He/She should be in a better position to do so after checking your skin first hand.
One thing you may want to consider is to use some products containing Vitamin C. It helps with lightening up some spots too.
And you need to wear sunscreen everyday…even indoors.
hi Rach, it is really a must to take care of the skin before it is too late.
sesame, it is Aveeno sunscreen with natural soy, and vitamins A, C, & E. so far, i like it on my skin because it is non-greasy and it makes the skin nice and smooth.
yes, i will never go out without sunscreen anymore…lesson learned.
thanks for your help. i did go to your site and read all about sunscreens. awesome site you got there. i bet you have a flawless skin.
Don’t be alarm Belle,, it’s just temporary it will go away, but yikes, get rid of that Ly Na ASAP or that Ganozhi (sorry but isn’t this a body soap?).
I mean really sa ato maski anong init, lakwatsa pa rin kahit walang sunblock, our folks couldn’t careless what SPF is.
Have you heard of AHAVA? ( http://www.ahava.com/ only available online in the US). Why not take a look at these skin products, they have everything to keep your skin nice and…
“… like me, soft , smooth and delicate. I can feel it, yeah!”
Happy Weekend Belle, I will be needing SPF’s when I get home sa Bicol.
K, hahaha…you are correct! but how many times did my skin peel off after i went swimming in the ocean. and it hurt!
so, you heard about ganozhi before? yes, it is a soap and a friend gave it to me to use on my face. why? not good?
i know there are vast array of skin products available on the internet all claiming best for the skin.
kailan ang uwi mo K? get ready for the july rain.
i am a nurse but i really have no idea which one to use or not so i suggest that you go see a dermatologist so the doctor can prescribe you a treatment for the brown spots. hope everything turns out well!
sun spots are scary no? i just use oil of olay products for UV protection.
Naku, I have them too. Got them after my trip to Palawan. My derma gave me a fading cream and I’ve been using it (not religiously) for the past month. Its been working naman. But its mild so medyo slow ang effect nya
Emu oil is a good moisturizer. I have been using it for a year. My foot got scalded last month when the denatured alcohol we used for the chafing dish spilled; just a dab of the oil and there was not even a sign of a third degree burn. I am told it is also good for myocarpal — not sure of the spelling == syndrome. But for brown spots? I doubt it.
Ny friend had dark spots (also from long exposure to the sun) which she treated with amira magic cream and her skin is almost back to flawless. You might want to try that.
I got those brown spots years ago when I went to Palawan. Naloka kami sa ganda ng beaches that we thought “anong sunblock sunblock, we’re sun goddesses!” Our group kept on laughing at our friend who was equipped with a hat, wore sunblock unfailingly. Ayun, siya lang walang sunburn, wah!
prinsesamusang, thanks for your advice.
caryn, yes it is and it looks awful.
cookie, meron ka din? i haven’t visited a derma but if it doesn’t improve i might make an appointment.
anna, i heard the emu oil is good, that is why i bought it. but, you are right, it doesn’t get rid of brown spots. amira magic cream is tempting. thanks!
faith, you had the brown spots now is gone? now, there is hope.
thank you all!
