Sheila, we picked ours when they are still hard though very much orange already as shown in the picture above. We could have left them still on the tree but our weather was nearing the time when a snow could fall anytime. So, we were forced to harvest them. And then we left them in the box for a week and only thereafter, they started ripening. Birds don't eat our persimmons. I've never tried ripening them off the tree. I am not sure if it's a good idea to leave them off the tree but then again I am not sure on this. In another week or two, we will pick the fruits.

I live in California and have a persimmon tree in my back yard that has been there since I was a little girl. I'm now 50. I never get a chance to see them rippen. The skin is always tough. By the time they are actually ripe the birds have their way with them and the end up on the ground. Is there a way to rippen them off of the tree?

Hi Belle,

I'm from Batalay, we are neighbour there but I am currently living in London. You have wonderful pictures of Batalay beach and catanduanes in general, which I am sure everyone enjoys!!! Thanks to you. We are planning to hold a first grand reunion of alumni from Batalay Elementary School. For this reason me and Nora Rojas Sinclair (coordinators) would like to borrow one of your (beachside)picture to be included in our collection of pictures which we will use as a backgound for our invitation. We want to invite you as well to join us on May 14 & 16, 2012 as guest, details will follow. I'm sorry that I have to communicate this way, I wish I know your email address so that I can send it privately.

Thanks a lot!!!

Best regard

This is the kind of life stories I like to watch on movies. Because they are for real. It proves that Jehovah provides for everybody. No matter what hardship we faced. It gives us time to reflect how blessed we are. That all these material things we have around can be just comforts but disturbance in our lives. The mere necessities we need are actually enough for us to exist.

I love your story Belle.

Hi,
I came across your blog whilst doing some research into the Catanduanes. I am researching for a film about the island and am looking for information about the local fishing communities and inparticular familes that might be interested in being involved. I was wondering if you would have any links that might be of any use or know of the best place to go about asking. Many thanks, Kate.

Belle -
Thank you for posting your recipe. I made pancit tonight with canton and rice vermicelli. Is the rice vermicelli the same as bihon? I know that I used to eat it room temperature or cold and loved it when I lived in Bermuda and Florida. I was told to put a little sesame oil in it after it cooked but I didn't know if I should and how do I keep from the rice vermicelli from being so sticky??? I look forward to making this again for my family - they loved it! Thank you again for posting! Have a great day!

I love how simple the Navajo live, it may not seem like much to others, but the Hogan is a smart way to live.
