Beating The System

Let me count the ways….
Take a look at the picture below. Notice any abnormalities?
We are trying to find ways to cut down on our gas bill. In the month of December alone, my gas bill skyrocketed to almost $500, and half of the time the kids were not even with us and my husband and I hardly ever cooked. It has doubled from last year’s bill. The thing is we were not notified of such increase, which is not right. Since our bills are deducted from our deposit automatically every month, we were not aware of such things until 3 months later when it has already damaged my bank account drastically. That hurt! Maybe, they did notify us, but we didn’t get it for sure or the company didn’t do a good job of spreading the information. Go figure.
How will the ordinary family/young couple living on a tight budget or retired couple living on a fixed income survive? The salary/social security remains the same, but everything else goes up. Is this what people call recession? In my almost 22 years of living in the USA, I have never seen this happen. It is alarming! Houses quit selling, our town’s revenue is down by several millions, dollar versus peso hit the all time low, the price of gas is soaring, and first class letters at work has declined quite substantially but bills/gas/airfare/cost of commodities are rising rapidly. Whatever happened? Who is to blame for such economic turmoil? The way things are going, there is a certainty that recession is about to hit this country unless something is done.
Meanwhile, we are doing our best to cut down on cost. I quit running my gas-generated furnace, and turned off pilot lights. I turned down my water heater to low. I now run economical electric space heater in my bedroom, and lately, as shown in the picture, I started using my camping stove for cooking. It suits us just fine because now that the kids are out of the house, I don’t do much cooking. I find that it is cheaper to buy the little propane cylinder ($2.65) than relying on our gas outifit served by Sem Stream Company. This way, I don’t have to pay huge surcharges, and adjustments, which is what drive the cost up. In my January bill of $400, my surcharge and adjustment alone amounted to $200, excluding state and city taxes. My gosh, with tiny income we are receiving, we get ripped off every direction. My energy usage was actually $165, which is tolerable, taxes excluded. So far, my gas usage this month is 11 cubit feet, down by 3/4 from last month, which will be reflected in next month bill. And I expect to see a bill in double figure in the future especially that the warmer weather is around the corner. We are in season now when we don’t need heating or cooling.
Maybe this is the time to look into solar water heating option since we have an abundance of sunshine where we live just like in the Philippines. I know I have friends who live quite a ways from town who rely solely on solar for electricity. Worth checking into, huh? Wouldn’t it be nice if we can avoid paying these huge gas and electricity bills.
It is time I go back to old ways – walking to and from work and eating rice and sugar…hehe
Hey, a penny saved is one and a quarter earned because taxes have to be paid on the earning to get the penny.

Oh my, $500 on gas bill alone sounds quite a lot. It’s good that you have been wisely cutting down on some things.
Solar water heating sounds very interesting.
Ohnoes, $400 bill for electricity? That was too much. Talking about bills, naku Belle, dito naman sa HK, I’m complaining on my flat rentals, it’s like I am paying dozens upon dozens of HK dollars for my housing that I can’t even own.
And you know what, it’s still ok to live in the prabins, for me at least. Well I walk like everyday going to work in less than 15mins and I literally like eating rice pero de-lata naman ang ulam wag lang asukal anoh?
That’s smart of you to use your camping stove, belle.
Ako naman, it’s the water bill that I’ve been complaining about lately. We had two dripping faucets kasi, which the husband wouldn’t fix. Well, he did try pero hindi naman talaga siya marunong. Tapos kami raw ang hindi marunong magsara ng gripo. But after paying $300 for 2 consecutive water bills (once every three months ito, pero kahit na, I usually pay only half of that), I took matters in my own hands. I called a plumber to fix and replace the leaky faucets. Nagastusan din ako since I had to pay around $600.00 for the service. Well, at least no more drip-drip and we’re saving water. And I’m sure it will be worth it in the long run.
here in the philippines, the prices of gasoline and electricity is also shooting up, but filipinos are more concerned with the continous increase in the prices of rice. tapos tatakutin pa ang mga tao that a food crisis is about to happen.
Belle, your gas bill is too much. Grabe.
It isn’t just there in the US where this is happening. The gasoline price here is a few centavos short of PhP50.00 na. Commercial rice is PhP38.00 while NFA is PhP20+ yata. Everything is going up.
Its a worldwide phenomenon so while my daughters are with my mother for summer vacation, I am doing a lot, a whole lot of paid posting to earn a few bucks. Pang-emergency.
Hope everything is well.
Times are indeed hard, Belle. It’s a global problem. But you are still very much luckier there.
sad, because instead of life becoming easy, we see these things happening. and it is not only there, Belle, though the increases are drastic, here, too, we try to cope with the soaring prices of basic commodities (even education, etc). now, with the sizzling hear, sometimes we have no choice but turn on air conditioning. what my kids do is try to be in the same room while they are awake–bonding time though.
yes, maybe, back to the old days, walking, simple lives, etc.
Hi Belle, missed your blog na. Sorry haven’t visited you for quite some time. Am back na, dami ko na rin pala na-missed. Congrats to your gorgeous daughter. Hope she makes it big there. Re: prices going up, grabe din dito Manila. Hirap mag budget, daily nag increase prices ng bigas same with milk, canned goods, etc…Nakakaloka na talaga. Am thinking of going back to work na again…
$500.00 for a gas bill? OMG! That is waaaaaaaay too much!
In these times every little bit helps and I told my kids to save up and use whatever we have. You never know what happens next.
$500 for gas??! Are you using heat-pump for heating system for the house? Heat pumps are less efficient than the oil furnace but then again, we well be hit with the oil too. I was freaking out over the 50% increase of our power bill.
Yes, you should definitely look into solar energy.
I blogged about a contest before: http://mygoodfinds.org/2007/10/18/bp-solar-decathlon/
Yes, it’s sponsored post but it’s about how different universities are looking for ways to tap into solar energy.
Mahal na din dito and electricity but your bill translates to over 20 T a month which is already a respectful monthly salary here.
I have since switched to LPG cooking. I don’t even have a toaster and have gone slow on my turbo-broiling. Ay naku.
